Description
This is a silk on linen alphabet and verse sampler in band format. It was worked in 1827 by Jane Williamson of New York. The threads of this marking sampler are heavily faded, and were later embellished with additional color. Winterthur’s study collection includes examples of outright fakes, as well as revivals mistaken for period pieces, but this particular sampler is an example of a genuine sampler with added color. The inscriptions on Jane's sampler read: "O may I seek in early youth, / What guards from future harms / Religion, Modesty and Truth / For these have always charms" Below is worked "By Jane Williamson / aged 10 years - 1827 / New York"
