Description
This wool and silk on linen pictorial sampler was worked by Mary M. White, daughter of William and Sarah Kitchen White, possibly from southern Ohio, or Jefferson County, Kentucky. Mary married Robert Glass Vance in 1824. The design and motifs found on this sampler are closely related to samplers from the Ohio/Kentucky region where the White and Vance families lived. Kentucky samplers are rare and few have been published. It is common for buildings to appear on samplers from Kentucky and southern Ohio, but the grouping of buildings found on this sampler is unusual. The inscription on Mary's sampler reads: "Mary M. White / March 1st 1822"
