Description
Crazy quilts are patchwork quilts made up of patches of randomly varying sizes, shapes, colors, and fabrics. No two motifs are repeated and the outlines of each patch are heavily embellished with embroidery stitches. The patterning and decorative stitches, probably influenced by Japanese prints, were some of the first examples of art needlework to appear in America. Many eclectic American crafts and needlework fads emerged in the late 19th century, but crazy quilting, or crazy patchwork, was one of a select few crafts deemed "fancy work."
