Description
This is a linen sampler worked with silk threads in 1802 by Doratha Rumer, who was from either Delaware or Maryland. This sampler belongs to a small group similar in style to other samplers from the area. It can be compared visually to another work in Winterthur's collection by Hannah McIntire, from New Castle, Delaware, dated 1790 (1993.0046). There are also similarities to another group of unknown origins and schools, recognized by Betty Ring as being made by girls from Delaware, Maryland, or possibly Pennsylvania, dating from 1811 to the 1830's. The inscription on this sampler is as follows: "And when my Saviour calls me home / Still this my cry shall be / Hinder me not come welcme [sic] death / I'll gladly go with the [sic]"; and a cross stitch inscription "Doratha Rumer / Her work done / In the year 1803".
