Description

This circular die is was created to stamp up a planchet or section of metal with an impression of the Great Seal United States, a design first adopted in 1782. The die's surface steps downward from the engraved central image in order to produce a stamped metal sheet with the seal in low relief. For military use, this design is often classified as the Staff Eagle Device and appears in use for insignia such as buttons and badges.
