Description
This is Rebecca Hill Haines' alphabet or marking sampler embroidered with silk threads on a loose-woven linen ground. Rebecca is from Odessa, Delaware and dated this sampler January 23, 1828. Rebecca and her sister Ann were the daughters of Tamar and Daniel Haines of Cantwell's Bridge (Odessa), Delaware. Tamar's, Ann's, and Rebecca's samplers, similar in appearance, are all in Winterthur's collection. However, it is the daughters whose samplers have a row worked in the Queen's stitch, which was a popular and complicated canvaswork stitch at that time. The inscription on this sampler is as follows: "RHHanes 1828 January 23".
