Description
This is Ann Haines' alphabet or marking sampler embroidered with silk threads on a loose-woven linen ground. Ann is from New Castle County (Odessa), Delaware and worked this sampler between 1808 and 1812. Ann and her sister Rebecca were the daughters of Tamar and Daniel Haines of Cantwell's Bridge, Delaware. Tamar's, Ann's, and Rebecca's samplers, similar in appearance, are all in Winterthur's collection. However, it is the daughters whose samplers have a row worked in the Queen's stitch, which was a popular and complicated canvaswork stitch at that time. The inscription on this sampler is as follows: "Ann Haines Her Work".
