Description
This is a silk on linen pictorial Adam and Eve sampler. It was worked in 1791 by Elizabeth Tunnecliffe of Albany, New York. It is the earliest known use of the urn-on-pedestal in American needlework. Elizabeth was probably the daughter of John Tunnecliffe, Otsego Town, Montgomery County, and probably attended a school in Albany. Several families of Tunnecliffs lived nearby. The inscription on Elizabeth's sampler reads: "ELIZABETH TUNNECLIFF / HER WORK DONE IN 1791"
