Description
This alphabet or band sampler was worked by Harriet Maria Ward in 1830 with silk threads on a linen ground. Harriet lived in Southboro, Massachusetts. Her unfinished sampler is stitched with the first four lines of one of the most widely used verses found on English and American samplers in the 19th century. Her verse reads: "Jesus permit thy gracious name to stand / As the first effort of my youthful hand / And while my fingers o er the canvass move / Engage my tender heart to seek thy love". The rest of the verse, if completed, would read: "With thy dear children may she have a part / And write thy name thyself upon her heart". Harriet signs her sampler: "Harriet M. Ward Age 14 / Aug. A. D".
