Shift (Chemise)

Description

A linen chemise shift. A long, slightly tapered undergarment, made of linen and designed with a simple, rectangular shape at the shouders and a U-shaped neckline. Generous gussets have been sewn into the underarms. The neckline is trimmed with a single border of lace. The sleeves are 1/2 length. The waist and skirt have a straight, slightly tapered form.This garment is embroidered in cross stitch on the front with the identifying characters: "I (period) G/8" A note on a rectangular paper label sewn onto the garment (at the neckline) is written in ink in script "Jane Greir for Jenna W. Greir"
