Abraham "Hartell" is listed as a bolt and brass knob latchmaker in the 1770 town directory for Willenhall in "The Tradesman's True Guide of A Universal Directory for Birmingham and the District Round About" published by Sketchley & Adams. In the 1818 directory of Willenhall published in "Staffordshire General & Commercial Directory for 1818" there are several "Hartill" family members recorded: Isaac, Mark, Thomas, William, and Samuel, three of whom were padlock manufacturers.
