Description
This sampler, worked by Catharin Martin in 1835, makes an excellent companion to another Pennsylvania German sampler in Winterthur's collection (1980.0060). Embroidered sixteen years later, it demonstrates an interesting sophistication while still retaining a very Germanic design. The motifs in the lower section are balanced and formal and worked in more subtle coloration of silk threads rather than the typical bright red and blue normally seen in samplers of this region. An unusual feature is the linen ground which was woven specifically with spaced double threads underscoring the baseline of the alphabets and other lettering. It is possible this was deliberately planned by Catharin, who may have woven her own fabric. This type of sampler was rarely ever framed, but rather stored with the embroiderer's other dowry items. The inscription reads: "Catharin Martin Sampler Worked in the 17 / th year of her age AD 1835" the Arabic numbers one through nine and the initials "JM" finish the line of text. The motifs on this sampler were copied by Catharin on a show towel (1994.0018) she made the following year.
