Edition Notes
Richard McArdell prepared a mezzotint of Chamberlain's 1762 portrait of Franklin, and it is probably McArdell's print that served as the direct source for this plate, which first appeared in William Russell, History of America (London: Printed for Fielding and Walker, 1778). This is a second state of the plate subsequently copied for printing in An Impartial History of the War in America (specific edition not known). The first state is without background detail.
