Description
This deep, conical mortar was hand carved from the burl of an elm tree. The mortar has steep, smooth sides which taper downwards to a cylindrical base. This mortar was most likely made by a Native American artist of the Pequot tribe in eastern Connecticut, as the base is decorated with six broad, shallow hollows gouged into its exterior sides – a design technique unique to the Pequot. The mortar was probably made for sale to the tourist trade. There is no pestle currently associated with it.
