Description
Thousands of small portable boxes or mulls to contain snuff (powdered tobacco) were made as personal accessories, often in novel designs, to be given as gifts. This early nineteenth-century snuff mull created from a sheep’s horn is an emblem of Scottish nationalism. The curled horn is ornamented with scalloped silver mounts attached by rivets. The domed lid features a mounted banded agate, while the underside contains human hair. “Dinna Forget” (do not forget or forget me not) is engraved in script across the rim. The inscription is bordered by thistle, Scotland’s national flower.
