On April 17, 1778, Saint-Non commented that he had bitten the cap too deeply, while in the original concept it was meant to float in air. To minimize the blackness of the cap, he re-etched the foreground to darken it even further. This impression seems to be from the second state of the copperplate in which the foreground shadows were so strengthened that the rays of light and the airborne cap appear lightened by contrast.
