Description
The top portion of a chasuble, made from brocaded worsted damask and lined with linen. The background of the damask is pink. Brocaded worsted damask is a wool fabric, made from long staple wool yarns (to create a smooth surface) and this example is also brocaded with silk. The fabric was heat treated under heated rollers to create the glossy finish. Orphrey bands made of metallic thread. This was commonly woven in Norwich, England and exported throughout Europe for use in ecclesiastical garments. The missing portions of this garment were probably used for upholstery (before this garment entered Winterthur's collection). Chasubles are religious vestments worn by clergy in Christian religions.
