Description
Dated 1835, this verse sampler with silk and wool threads on linen was worked by Elizabeth Ann Townsend of Newark, Delaware while under the tuition of Eliza McKay. The octagonal design at the center reflects the style of the time and would have corresponded well with Empire furniture decor. The inscription on Elizabeth's sampler reads: "With all thy soul / Love God above / And as they self / [underscore] Thy neighbour love / E A Townsend [underscore] / 1835"
