Description
James Peale's painting practice changed around 1818 when his eyesight affected his ability to work on the painstakingly small scale that portrait miniatures demanded. He turned his attention to still-life painting, a genre favored by his nephew, Raphaelle. This composition reflects James's exposure to European masters of still life--especially the Dutch and Spanish--in his emphasis on subtle shifts in light and shadow accompanying a rich color palette.
