Description
This Congressional Medal of Honor was awarded to Henry Algernon du Pont (1838-1926) for his gallantry as an officer at the Battle of Cedar Creek in Virginia on October 19, 1864 during the Civil War. Colonel Henry du Pont was a graduate of West Point and served in the U.S. Army from 1861 to 1875. He became the president of the Wilmington & Northern Railroad and from 1906-17 he served as a U.S. Senator for Delaware. Du Pont and was a gentleman farmer who lived at Winterthur and was the father of the museum's founder, Henry F. du Pont.
