From the series painted and published by William Hogarth, Marriage a la Mode, (six plates), 1745. State III, with the tassel of hair engraved on the forehead of the Countess. State IV is with retouched hatching to strengthen and darken areas including: shadows, the Cupid above the fireplace, and the steward and the book in his pocket. State V, with additional shadows and strengthening, most significantly to the lock of hair.
