Quilted petticoats were worn by all classes of women. The materials and overall quality and complexity of the quilting varied with the levels of status. Petticoats like this one, silk quilted with a relatively simple design and lined with two different types of cotton fabric reflect a moderately prosperous background. This quilted silk petticoat is pleated at the waist and designed to close with a side slit and a wooden button. Brown satin is quilted with repeating chevron patterns along the upper two thirds of the skirt and large leaves over a diaper pattern along the bottom third. The lining is comprised of two types of cotton fabric. A glazed cotton along the top two thirds and an unglazed plain weave cotton along the bottom third.
