Description
This fragment of unglazed earthenware is part of a vessel of a possibly circular but now unknown form. Unlike the other, paler-bodied fragments that were donated to Winterthur in this group (see 1968.0315.005-.013), this example features a darker, more brick-colored clay body. This object may be associated with the Upper Mattaponi Tribe and was collected by amateur archaeologist Cazenove G. Lee, Jr.. It reportedly was "gathered at the mouth of the site at the Indian Village at Mattaponi Creek, Nottingham, Prince [George] County, Maryland. Jan 1931." No details are recorded regarding the discovery methods used for this object.
