Upper Mattaponi Tribe
Description
This fragment of unglazed earthenware is part of a vessel of a possibly circular but now unknown form. Its decorative pattern was created by impressing the outer surface with a cord, twine or a basket. The slightly inconsistent body color may have resulted from the low and unever firing temperature. This object may be associated with the Upper Mattaponi Tribe and was collected by amateur archaeologist Cazenove G. Lee, Jr.. It reportedly was "gathered at the mouth of the site at the Indian Village at Mattaponi Creek, Nottingham, Prince [George] County, Maryland. Jan 1931." No details are recorded regarding the discovery methods used for this object.
