Andiron (Miniature andiron)

Description
One of a pair of miniature, three-legged elephant ivory andirons (with 1967.0869.002). Each andiron consists of a ball-and-spool turned shaft with an acorn finial mounted on two arched legs. A straight billet bar with rear spur extends from the front legs, and curls into an S-curved leg at back. Elephant ivory andirons such as this pair were likely commercially produced in England for export to the United States and France during the nineteenth century.

Origin Notes
London was identified as a place of origin by the visiting organics consultant Dr. Stuart M. Frank while he was in residence at Winterthur (June 1-6, 2022). Additional research in nineteenth-century periodicals indicates that ivory was industrially turned in numerous locations across England, including Darlington and other industrial cities. Further research is needed to narrow down the creation place. (C. Griffiths, 6/8/2022)
