Description
This deep, lidded storage basket is made with a basketweave and reinforced with a splint band at its rim. The container is square at its base and transitions upwards into cylindrical sides. The lid, a low domed circle formed of radiating splints, fits over the rim of the basket. Its exterior was painted with “X” designs, and though this basket suffered water damage at some point in its past, traces of these decorations remain faintly visible on some of the horizontal splints. The shape and decoration of this basket indicate it was likely made by a Native American artist of the Pequot tribe in southeastern Connecticut.
