The rim of this dish bears the German inscription, "Susanna Steltz: ihre schu\"ssel: Alles was ihr wolt das euch die Leute duhn sollen das duth ihr ihnen, Merz. 5.\t.\h 1789" (Susanna Steltz her dish, Everything that you want people should do to you, that you do to them--or, do unto others as you would have them do unto you). A further inscription between the heads of the birds reads "Hir ist Abgebilt ein dabelter Adler" (Here is pictured a spread eagle). Susanna Steltz, whose name appears on this dish, was born Susanna Grob (Grubb) in 1752 and married Peter Steltz. She died in 1832 and is buried at the Falckner Swamp Reformed Church in New Hanover, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.
