Description
This large, multi-part splint basket consists of a tall, conical basket which sits in the middle of a lower, “X” shaped basket. The base of the conical basket is woven to the center crossing of the “X” basket, connecting the two. The basket's exterior was painted with alternating green and red chevrons, traces of which remain faintly visible. Based on the basket’s form and the fact that it has no handles or other clear carrying method, it is believed this basket was intended as a static centerpiece, possibly to display fruit or dried flowers. It was most likely created in the Eastern Woodlands region of North America, possibly by a Native American artist.
