Origin Notes
Origin is the vicinity of Westerly or Kingston, Rhode Island. Previously catalogued as a "Carver chair." Forman notes this chair's finials differed from the "flambeaux" finials used by early Plymouth Colony and Boston area chairmakers, and appear to derive from a much earlier English type (as is also true of the continued use of slanted arms). These details suggest this chair was made by a nonurban turner who emigrated from the northern or western counties of England. A possible relationship exists between this chair and coastal Connecticut shop traditions.
