Description
Charles Willson Peale was the first Peale artist to travel to London. There he studied under renowned American artist Benjamin West, court painter to King George III and president of the Royal Academy. This painting of Richard Bennett Lloyd, completed shortly after Peale's return from England, echoes the Grand Manner portrait style popular among London elites. The sitter's sumptuous red suit, the classical column, and the picturesque landscape all reference Marylander Lloyd's wealth and sophistication. West would paint Lloyd two years later during his military commission in London. Peale continued to seek West's feedback for many years and avidly promoted his teacher's work in the United States.
