Description
Organic, like amber, and reddish in color, like cornelian, coral regained popularity during the end of the eighteenth century. During this period, coral beads were often imported from Italy and sent to the United States through England. Philadelphia silversmith Daniel Dupuy Jr. (1719–1807) responded to the fad for coral ornaments by creating a coral necklace and bracelet. Part of a matching set, this necklace is made of a single strand of flattened globular coral beads linked together by twisted gold wire. The matching bracelet (Winterthur 1962. 0085.001)is comprised of two strings of coral.
