Description
This small, rectangular, bright red leather case once enclosed the brooch containing George and Martha Washington's locks of hair (1962.0084 A). The lid has an embossed double-lined rectangular border enclosing a roundel in each corner on the lid exterior and has a C-shape brass clasp with an iron pin on the long side opposite the hinge. The interior has a creamy white velvet lower case with a conforming fit for the oval brooch and is edged with a black and white and metallic ribbon on the upper edge. The lid interior has a whitish silk lining inscribed in black ink: "J.S. Wolcott." in script. There is no visible mark or sign of a maker, although the exterior lid possibly had an adhesive paper label no longer present. The name and initials likely belong to Dr. John Stoughton Wolcott, son of Elizabeth Stoughton Wolcott and Oliver Wolcott, Jr.
