Stand (Work table)

Description

This one-drawer stand features a shaped top with projecting round corners to conform to the ring-turned upper ends of the legs. The legs are designed as inverted balusters with astragal rings at the widest diameter above exaggerated discs above inverted baluster feet. The top, frame and drawer are grain-painted to suggest rosewood, and the legs daubed with red patches on black ground to harmonize with the grain-painting. The borders of the top, frame, drawer front, and ring-turnings on the legs are defined by green and yellow striping. A basket of fruit and standing leaves with serrated edges, in gray, red, green, and yellow, is stenciled on the drawer front. The exuberant design and painted decoration relates to that of furniture made and paint-decorated in the vicinity of Paris, Maine.
