Description
This storage box was made by a Shaker craftsman, possibly in the Canterbury, New Hampshire Shaker community, around 1850. The oval box is made of thin strips of maple wrapped around pine discs on the top and bottom and secured with copper rivets. It retains its original red paint stain. Small, lightweight, lidded pantry boxes like this one served a variety of storage needs, including storage for sewing notions and materials. This box holds a modern spool holder that Shaker collector Pete Smyrl made to fit the container.
