Description
This Shaker device, known as a swift, is designed to spool yarn into a ball. This particular swift was made in New England or New York around 1850. It is constructed of a turned wooden cylinder with a cup for holding the balled yarn and a vise for attaching the swift to a tabletop. Wooden slats connected by strings surround the cylinder and can be opened or closed in a manner similar to that of an umbrella.
