Description
A member of the Shaker community in New Lebanon, New York made this handheld dustpan around 1870. It is made of tin-plated iron, a material the Shakers preferred over sheet metal due to its sturdiness and durability. Early Shaker collectors Robert and Hazel Belfit acquired this dustpan directly from Shaker Eldress Annie Rosetta Stephens (1860-1948).
