Description
Whisk brooms, handheld brooms made of a type of grass called broomcorn, are among the objects most commonly associated with the Shakers. Not only do they exemplify the Shakers’ particular emphasis on cleanliness, but Shaker communities produced huge numbers of these brooms to sell to the outside world. The handles of some whisk brooms were made by simply binding one end of the broomcorn with lengths of string, while others, like this one, feature turned wooden handles. The end of this broom’s handle has a small hole with a string looped through it, allowing it to hang from a peg when not in use.
