Description
A vivid red lead glass handle mounted onto a gilded silver utensil brought the gem-like color into the diner’s dessert course experience. In a competitive marketplace for domestic cutlery, producers of silver and silverplate developed relationships with glass manufacturers to create large sets with solid glass handles. This example was produced by a German firm; British and American flatware industries also embraced the challenge of making such seemingly fragile handles durable, beautiful, and pleasurably tactile.
