Description
The Shaker firkin (sugar pail) is comprised of coopered staves that are butted together and secured with steam-bent wooden hoops closed with overlapping, intertwined fingers. The design of the lid repeats that of the hoops. The bent handle is attached to the sides with plugs that pierce the sides and are secured from within with pins. Firkins were used to hold and transport a variety of both wet and dry contents in farmyard and kitchen settings.
