Description
Considered a “lost” picture by American expatriate Benjamin West, this portrait was probably painted in London sometime between May 1775 and late in 1777. It was likely commissioned as a pendant to John Singleton Copley’s portrait of Morris’ wife, the colonial Dutch heiress Mary Philipse (1964.0023 A), produced during Copley's 1771 tenure in New York. Painted about ten years after Roger Morris retired from his illustrious career in the British army, West’s painterly approach is apparent in the sitter’s shiny silver buttons and sparkling epaulets.
