Description
This hand-colored lithograph, produced in 1872 by the New York firm of Currier & Ives, depicts Dolly Varden, a fictional character from Charles Dickens' novel Barnaby Rudge (1841). Both flirtatious and fashionable, Varden’s iconic attire was characterized by a wide-skirted with a tight-bodiced print dress, accessorized with a white fichu (triangular scarf), and a flowered hat with a broad, drooping brim. This character’s influence extended beyond the world of literature and fashion, inspiring the naming of the Dolly Varden trout, noted for its colorful and distinctive markings.
