Description
his hand-colored lithograph, created in 1851 by New York based printmaker Nathaniel Currier, depicts Amelia Bloomer, an influential American feminist, wearing the Bloomer costume, a knee-length skirt worn over full Turkish-style trousers. Amelia Bloomer (1818-1894) championed women's rights, including the right to more practical and comfortable clothing. The Bloomer costume challenged the restrictive fashion norms of the mid-19th century, and the term "Bloomers" eventually became synonymous with any loose-fitting trousers worn by women. Nathaniel Currier and his business partner James Ives were best known for producing popular prints, covering current events, which included the activities of the women’s rights movement.
