Description
Henry Lapp (1862–1904) was an Amish artist and cabinetmaker from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Lapp was deaf and, beginning in his youth, he employed watercolor paintings to express himself and connect with his community. His paintings are rare examples of works on paper from the Old Order Amish, who held regulations against decorative objects in the home. In his paintings, Lapp used bright colors and bold lines to create a world of his own. Inspired by his local environs, he often gifted his work to friends and family who cherished them in their homes for generations.
