Description
This cup (or mug) together with a pap boat and small plate formed a personalized silver set (possibly with a spoon and fork) intended for a child. All three items have decorative polygonal hammer work covering the surface, initials “E de FL” highlighted with copper and gold electroplating, and applied seed pods, leafy fronds, insects, and a trailing vine wrapping around the form. The set’s Japanese metalwork inspiration represents a narrow design window at Tiffany & Company when adult taste, international design, and technical complexity were adapted for smaller scale items. Tiffany soon shifted to creating sterling silver sets with nursery rhymes and childhood-themed imagery, much like those created by ceramic and glass designers.
