Description
For several centuries the term pap boat described a small hand-held spouted vessel used to feed soft food and liquids to young children or infirm adults, but it was nearly out of use when Tiffany & Company produced this special order. Silver pap boats were functional and could be symbolic, often engraved as christening presents. This monogrammed example is one of a three-piece mixed metal child’s set including a small plate and mug. The electroplated copper and gold initials “E de Fl,” the copper seed pod, and gold moth combined with leafy trailing vines express the aesthetic taste for Japanese metalwork incorporated into American silver.
