Description
This is a bronze advertising token for Alexander Smith Carpet Mills, which was located in Yonkers, New York. The obverse side has an eagle motif above a banner reading “Alexander Smith.” Text on the reverse side reads “America’s Favorite Axminster,” referring to a type of machine-woven carpet named after the town of Axminster, England. Alexander Smith Carpet Mills was a major producer of carpets from its founding in 1845 until it ceased operations in New York in 1954. The site of the mill complex in Yonkers is now a national historic district. This object is one of a large group transferred to Winterthur from the American Textile History Museum when it closed in 2017.
