Description
This machine-sewn cushion cover is made of cotton fabric printed to resemble a patchwork quilt. The Cocheco Manufacturing Company, based in Dover, New Hampshire, printed the fabric used to make the cover around 1880. The design features a large, central octagon-shaped patch with a floral motif. Surrounding the central patch are three different illustrations depicting the Charles Dickens character Samuel Pickwick. Between the Pickwick scenes and the floral patch are various floral, checkerboard, and geometric patterns in triangle, diamond, and trapezoid-shaped areas. This object is one of a large group transferred to Winterthur from the American Textile History Museum when it closed in 2017.
