Description
The A. & W. Sprague Manufacturing Company, located in Cranston, Rhode Island, manufactured this printed cotton fabric sometime in the second half of the 19th century. The printed design consists of repeating flower motifs throughout the body and a row of floral fringe along one edge. An original label, printed with an engraving of the A. & W. Sprague mill complex, is still attached to the reverse. The image prominently features several smokestacks billowing dark smoke into the air – a symbol, at the time, of industrial prowess. This object is one of a large group transferred to Winterthur from the American Textile History Museum when it closed in 2017.
