Description
This is a black, twill weave cotton sample with a paper label attached to one end. The names on the label, “Oppy Brand” and “Brand & Oppenheimer,” are probably not the manufacturers of the fabric but rather commission merchants. Commission merchants worked to link textile mills with markets in large cities in exchange for a share – their commission – of the sales. This object is one of a large group transferred to Winterthur from the American Textile History Museum when it closed in 2017.
