Description
This cotton textile fragment was most likely manufactured by the Berkeley Company, located in Cumberland, Rhode Island, sometime in the early 20th century. The fabric has patterned bands woven into its surface. Berkeley Mill was owned by the Lonsdale Company, one of the largest textile manufacturers in Rhode Island. The silver label on this textile, depicting a beaver sitting on a tree branch, is identical to other Berkeley Company labels except that it is missing the company’s name. This example, instead, has a filigree design in the lower center of the frame where “Berkeley Company” is usually printed. This object is one of a large group transferred to Winterthur from the American Textile History Museum when it closed in 2017.
